Why the First Visit Matters More Than You Think

We're excited to introduce a new monthly series from our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Adrine Yadegarian. In her first piece, she explores why those early newborn visits matter more than you think.

Becoming a first-time parent involves a wave of emotions—excitement, love, fear, happiness, and even guilt. When parents bring their newborn to their very first doctor’s visit, they step into the office experiencing something entirely new. Many arrive with anxiety, searching for reassurance, human connection, and the simple comfort of knowing that everything is okay. As pediatricians, one of the most important things we do is listen to families, especially during those early newborn visits, when reassurance can be just as critical as medical expertise. Unfortunately, increasing documentation demands and shrinking appointment windows make it more difficult for some providers and offices to offer this level of attentive, compassionate care. Too often, the time we should be spending with families is consumed by charting, coding, and administrative tasks that follow us long after the patient has left the room.

This is where tools like AI-powered medical scribes are starting to make a real difference. When documentation is handled quietly in the background—capturing the clinical conversation, generating accurate notes, and supporting billing—providers are free to give their full attention to the family in front of them, rather than splitting their focus between the conversation and the screen. When we can look directly at new parents instead of a computer screen, something shifts. We can answer questions thoughtfully, address fears with empathy, and provide the kind of reassurance that builds lasting trust. That trust is the foundation of excellent pediatric care—and it’s what allows families to leave visits feeling informed, confident, and supported.

In our practice, we use Whadata to reduce the burden of documentation and workflow inefficiencies, and it has allowed us to practice the kind of medicine we trained for—care rooted in connection, trust, and presence. When technology supports the human side of healthcare, pediatricians are better equipped to support families during some of the most emotional moments of their lives.
